Resident leaves mental health facility, breaks window of nearby home, batters occupant, Monona police say

Wisconsin State Journal - 2024/3/26

Mar. 25—A resident left a mental health facility on Saturday night, broke a window of a nearby home and battered an occupant, Monona police reported.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Monona police were called to an adult residential mental health facility in the 300 block of Femrite Drive after a resident pushed an employee and fled out of a window, Chief Brian Chaney said in a statement.

As Monona officers were on the way, a burglary was reported on Indian Trace in Madison, which is adjacent to the facility. Believing it might be the resident, the Monona officers diverted to that call, and while they were on the way, it was reported that the resident had broken a window to the home, battered a person in the home and was reported to be standing in the fenced backyard of the residence, Chaney said.

A Monona officer talked to the resident after arriving at the scene, but the resident did not respond. The resident was bleeding from a cut suffered in the incident and was cared for by Madison paramedics and officers, then taken to a local hospital, Chaney said.

The investigation determined that the resident tried to get into the home through a closed window by punching and shattering the glass. The resident then was confronted by an occupant of the home, and the resident punched the occupant in the face. That person was treated by paramedics and taken to a local hospital, Chaney sad.

The resident of the mental health facility was taken to a secure mental health facility, and the incident may be referred to the Dane County District Attorney's Office, Chaney said.
