Monadnock Family Services has plans for Mental Health Month

Monadnock Ledger Transcript - 4/26/2018

May is Mental Health Month and Monadnock Family Services is pleased to bring the following offerings to the community throughout the month:

Film Screening – Hidden in Plain Sight – May 3rd

Hidden in Plain Sight features the stories of 8 homeless individuals and the staff and volunteers at Hundred Nights Shelter in Keene NH. Each homeless person was asked a series of questions highlighting the diversity of circumstances that lead them to their situation. Leaders, workers and volunteers of three shelters share their experiences and reflect on how homelessness in Keene may be diminished.

The film is dedicated to Carrie Covey, one of the homeless interviewed who died shortly after the recording of her interview. It is produced by Greg Pregent at 710 Main Films 2017.

Film Screening – Paper Tigers – May 15th in Keene and May 22nd in Peterborough

This moving film follows a year in the life of an alternative school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families.

“Stressed brains can’t learn.” That was the nugget of neuroscience principal Jim Sporleder used to shape a new way of discipline: one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgement and suspension. Fights declined by 75% and graduation rates increased five-fold. Paper Tigers is a testament to what the latest developmental science is showing: Just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person’s life.

NB: This film contains strong language and may not be suitable for small children
