Party raises $33,000 for mental health programs

Sunday Star - 1/4/2018

CENTREVILLE - The Queen Anne's County Mental Health Committee's Spurs & Spirits Barn Party was a success, raising more than $33,000 to benefit local mental health programs.

Grove Creek Mule Farm in Centreville was the setting for the downhome event. More than 130 attendees were greeted with the signature drink for the evening - Moscow Mules

As chicken was grilled on an outdoor pit by barbecue master Adam Shiley and his team, guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, including butternut squash soup from the Inn at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club.

Line dance caller Mike Dey, with the help of DJ Big Al, brought the barn alive with country line dancing.

Guests were treated to a buffet fit for cowboys and cowgirls, prepared by the members of the Queen Anne's County Mental Health Committee, and smoked brisket by the Narrows Restaurant.

Attendees bid on a wide range of silent auction items throughout the evening, and the live auction brought about some lively bidding.

Janice Lyon's famous warm apple crisp for dessert capped off the evening.

The event also generated participation from businesses and individuals as sponsors: Anne Arundel Medical Center, Bay Area Association of Realtors, The Marksmen Company, Chesapeake Laser & Skin Care Center, Freestate and Son Insurance Agency, The Flower Shop, Bernard and Betty Hardesty Charitable Foundation Inc., Kram & McCarthy, Queenstown Bank, Diane and Pete Pappas, Roseland Nurseries, Shore United Bank, Merry Tobin, Alexis Thomas and Valliant & Associates Wealth Management.

QACMHC's next event is the Old Bags Luncheon scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at Prospect Bay Country Club.

The proceeds from QACMHC's events support those members of the community who need assistance coping with mental illness. This year, more than $42,000 in grants was awarded to six local mental health resource organizations.
