Northampton’s Anchor House of Artists has represented the work of artists living with mental illnesses — and subsidized

Daily Hampshire Gazette - 11/2/2017

Northampton’s Anchor House of Artists has represented the work of artists living with mental illnesses — and subsidized their studio lives — since November of 1997.

In addition to celebrating its 20th anniversary this Saturday, Anchor House will also be celebrating this year’s extension of its project in the form of a 1,000 square foot gallery addition called the New England Visionary Artists Museum (the space “had conveniently been owned” by a former flooring business, notes gallery owner Michael Tillyer, “so it has a beautifully tiled floor as well as clearly delineated areas for displaying artwork”).

Intended to “preserve the legacies of artists recently passed, whose work followed unique, idiosyncratic paths” the gallery currently houses a retrospective exhibit of the legacies of five Anchor House artists. Titled “Five Visionary Lives Well-Lived,” it includes work by Genevieve Mae Burnett, Mary Dunn, Deborah Sklar, James Coburn and ?Danny Gayder.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the celebration will feature 200 works of art spread throughout five showrooms, dancing to two live bands, plus with cake and other refreshments (potluck food welcome).

“Cash donations are gladly received and go to support the artists and the new museum.” Anchor House and the New England Visionary Artists Museum are at 518 Pleasant St. in Northampton.
